Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will mine look exactly like the photographs?

Not exactly, and that is the loveliest thing about it. A machine repeats itself perfectly because it has nothing of itself to give. A pair of hands cannot, and would not want to. The small wanderings in a line of engraving, the tension of a weave, the depth of a dye are where the maker is still present in the object, the way handwriting is present in a letter and absent from a printed page.

What stays the same every time is the material, the dimensions and the construction. What varies is small, and human, and yours alone.

Q: Who actually makes it?

Moroccan artisans working in their own workshops, and the women of the Amal Association, through which MadeinAtlas provides the infrastructure for rural women to work from home-based workshops in the Atlas.

We do not simply buy finished stock and resell it. We collaborate: we plan the work together, we share it, and we share what it earns. That is the difference between a supply chain and a partnership, and it is why traditional craft here can still be a living rather than a memory.

Q: How do I clean and care for it?

It depends on the material. The exact care notes for this piece are in Product Details above. In general:

Brass: dust with a dry cloth. Polish with a brass cleaner only if you want it bright; left alone it darkens into a deeper antique tone. That is patina, not damage, and many owners prefer it. Our brass is solid, not plated, so polishing never wears through a coating.

Wood: dry cloth only. Keep it out of standing water and prolonged direct sun, which dries and fades it. A little wood oil once or twice a year keeps carved surfaces from going brittle.

Leather: wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth and let it dry away from heat. Condition occasionally. Leather darkens and softens with handling; that is the piece settling into use, not wearing out.

Wool: air it rather than wash it; wool cleans itself in open air. Spot-clean with cool water and a little wool detergent. Hand-wash cold only when genuinely needed, never wring, and dry flat. Hanging wet wool stretches the shoulders permanently. Store folded, not on a hanger.

Straw, raffia and basketry: dust with a soft brush and keep dry. If it loses its shape, dampen it very lightly, reshape by hand and let it dry naturally.

Ceramic and zellige: wash by hand with warm water and mild soap. Avoid sudden temperature changes and abrasive scourers, which dull the glaze.

Q: Can I return it if it is not right?

Yes. Returns are accepted within 30 days of delivery, unused and in its original packaging. Handmade variation, a difference in tone, grain or engraving from the photographs, is not a fault. If a piece genuinely is not right for you, we would rather have it back than have you keep something you do not love.

Full terms are on our Return and Refund Policy page, and delivery timings are in Shipping & Delivery below.

Q: Is it really handmade?

Yes, and the piece itself will tell you. Look for the things a factory removes: a line of engraving that wanders a hair off true, a weave that tightens where the maker's hands did, a colour that sits a shade away from the last batch because it was dyed in a small one.

Machine-made goods are identical because identical is cheap to produce. Ours are not identical because each one passed through a person's hands in a workshop in Morocco, and took the time it took. If two pieces ever arrived indistinguishable from one another, that would be the thing worth questioning.
